Transportation
Taxis
Taxis can be hailed on the street or at designated stands. (Rides
between midnight and 6 a.m. are subject to a 50% surcharge.) Buses
Private companies operate bus services for inter city routes, as
well as within the city itself. Some are air-conditioned, though most of the local
buses tend to be overcrowded. Railways
The KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) provides interconnecting services
between Singapore, Butterworth and Kuala Lumpur. Other stations towards the northern
peninsula join up with the Thai Railways at the border. There are also
many inter city trains that run from Kuala Lumpur. It is advisable to purchase
your tickets one or two days ahead of time although it can be bought before departure.
Renting/Driving
Cars can be hired with or without drivers. Self-driving requires
an International license and the minimum age is 22. Traffic keeps to the left.
Seat belts are compulsory for the driver as well as the front seat passenger.
